Flat-Ripple by Nicolas Sassoon

Few weeks ago Nicolas Sassoon collaborated with Sidian Ersatz & Vanes for their 2013 collection. Nicolas was commissioned to make the design for a shirt and a website making reference to it, which is called Flat-Ripple.com. Above there is only a cropped version of the background he used for the piece, so beautiful!.

Emilio Gomariz

Some pieces made this year, Emilio Gomariz.
The GIF above is called T/001, is a pixel based generative transition between RGB colors, it's originally displayed through tile repetition filling the whole page as you can see here. See more;

RGB Landscapes, 2013

RGB Landscapes is a GIF series containing 52 pieces featuring horizontal RGB lines which are animated horizontally creating different moire effects.

1PXW, 2013

1PXW combines web and GIF allowing the user to create a horizontal landscape formed of 1px width animated GIFs using the menu to choose between the different (15) sets and to pop up them by moving the cursor over the little black surface, where Y = changes time interval and X = keeps same time

HR URL01, 2013

HR URL01 creates an animated horizontal composition which works through vertical repetition of any image URL inserted as source then is possible to change the height of from 10px to 1px.

Random Rainbow, 2013

Random Rainbow is a collaborative piece between Emilio Gomariz & Chris Shier made for DigitArt exhibition curated by BRIGHT at Centre Pompidou. The piece was featured through Pompidou's internal WIFI connection at Studio 13/16 during the show (June 29 - August 5), now the piece is already online at http://csh.bz/rr/, it has different behavior on mobile devices as it allows the multitouch feature, as you can see in the video below.

ii URL02. 2013

ii URL02 works through interactive (1px height) horizontal distortion, the user can insert any image URL such as GIF, JPEG or PNG, play with and share the customized URL as the example below would be http://emiliogomariz.net/iiurl02/?url=http://computersclub.org/draw/collection/CC_1004.png . A piece finished because of some great help from Chris Shier too.

Don Slepian

Don Slepian made Sunflower Geranium in 1983 a video compilation of live performances showing different visual effects created through a custom array of specialized hardware and software to mix synthesized video imagery and original electronic music for a live audience. One of my favorite parts of Sunflower Geranium is at the end where there are several short animations working through pixel based geometric shapes, Slepian explains to Rhizome how he produced them; "is the output of one of my original CEEMAC scores in which I attempt to create texture and dimension using diffraction patterns and chroma shifting. In Apple II "Hi-Res" mode I was working with a 280px by 192px screen, 57 thousand pixels in all. A far cry from the 2.0736 million pixels we take for granted in standard 1080p video frames."
Into the post you can see these short animations as animated GIFs but I highly recommend to watch the whole piece and read an interesting interview with Don Slepian about the process of at Rhizome. See more;

Peter Erskine

"Peter Erskine's "Secrets of the Sun: Millennial Meditations" is a culmination of his interest in the interplay of light, space, and architecture. For thirty years his sculpture has explored the way in which light falls on modulated surfaces. "Secrets of the Sun" uses the emotional impact of art to address the full range of nature from its most elemental expression as pure light to its most complex expression as global ecology.
In "Cromos" and "New Light on Rome" the universal beauty and power of the solar spectrum, one of Nature’s most fundamental forces, is superimposed on the surfaces and structure of some of the most beautiful public buildings in Italy.
Because the sun’s angle, intensity and color continually change with the hour, day, and season, the art, the ancient monuments, the trains and the stations are continually perceived in a fresh, new light." - Peter Erskine's website. See more;

New Light on Rome 2000

"Trajan's Markets Aula and Hemicycle, House of the Knights of Rhodes, Porta di San Sebastiano, Criptoportico of Nero - stone witnesses to a bygone culture in Rome that today needs to be preserved and protected. At the dawn of the new millenium, these two thousand year old buildings are becoming a stage and a backdrop for a Solar Specturm art installation by Peter Erskine.

Erskine uses prisms and mirrors to spread white sunlight into the colors of the solar spectrum. He floods roman arches and columns with rainbows. Changing with the hours and seasons, the art is different every day of the year. The rays of the Sun, the origin of all life, create a fascinating interplay of colors and forms. Here, solar energy and monuments to human creativity unite to form a living work of art in which visitors themselves become creators and participants. We see ancient Rome in a new light."

Cromos: Solar Spectum art in public architecture, 2000 - 2001

"Commissioned by the Italian State Railway, Ferrovia dello Stato, Peter Erskine has created solar spectrum environmental installations in Rome Termini station, Florence Santa Maria Novella station, Milan Central station and on 30 EuroStar high speed trains running between Rome and Milan.

The geographic and architectural scope of the project probably makes it the largest artwork in the world. Over 5000 square feet of specially designed prism material were used including over 3.5 miles of prism in the 30 trains. However, the total project weight of all prism material used is less than 150 kilograms and virtually all the art materials will be recycled by the artist.

Ecologically, the Cromos project is an example of the "sustainability" principle of doing much more with much less."

Spectrum of Time, 1999

"Spectrum of Time" is a permanent rainbow sundial calendar installation in the Kokerei Zollverein, a United Nations Historic Preservation site. Hour and month lines painted on the walls and floor of the 40' X 40' X 40' industrial museum space mark the hours, summer and winter solstices, and the spring and autumn equinoxes with astronomical accuracy. A 30' X 30' cross of solar spectrum light powered by the rotation and tilt of the earth tells the time and date. On cloudy days a laser pointer driven by a solar tracking program fills in for the rainbow.

Spectrum of Time, Rainbow Sundial calendar. Visitors walk inside a living map of the solar year. Each "Rainbow Sundial calendar" is a unique joining of astronomy, architecture, locale, and art.

Sunrise, 1999

"Sunrise" is the first art experience in the Kokerei. Riding in a people mover, viewers ride the 400', 20 degree incline following the dark path of the coal in its original conveyor belt tunnel. As they rise, the viewers travel through a fog inlluminated 400' long 10' high solar spectrum beam, and pass through the changing colors of the rainbow. When they disembark on the factory roof they see the solar powered 8' X 8' heliostat solar tracking mirror, and solar prism that create the art.

ionreq

ionreq creates generative forms, textures and particles through programming. One of his series it is called SmoothLife which is a generalization of Conway's Game of Life ionreq discovered while playing around with GPU programming. He explains how it work in this video. You can download the source code and Windows executables from sourceforge (links in his youtube channel). I specially like the 3D series of SmoothLife which show organic and colorful digitalized creatures moving and reacting each-other into a cube. See more;

There Is A Rainbow by Kent Rogowski

I specially like this piece called "There Is A Rainbow" from the "Everything that I wish I could be" book-collage series created by Kent Rogowski.

"Everything that I wish I could be is an exploration of language, emotions and the desire to change and improve one’s self. There is a self-help book for almost every moment and problem in life; from relationship advice to dealing with the inevitability of death. Each large format photograph, pictures an arrangement of title pages and spines, from up to 100 self-help books that are based around a central theme. Together, the titles create larger narratives, which become portraits of emotions, people and events in life." - Kent Rogowski. See more;

7 Rainbow Minutes by Paul Flannery

Paul Flannery tells us more about this beautiful minimalist new piece;
"7 rainbow minutes is part of an occasional series of clocks. Each clock uses a computer file type to keep its time. Often this is a gif with each frame ticking over at one second intervals. In this piece though, each minute is witness to one colour of the rainbow mixing in to the next.

Underpinning the series is an interest in how a computer file, in this case an mp4 might be considered a unit of time. CPU and connection speeds will likely vary according to user and location which combine to make it somewhat unreliable as a measure." - Paul Flannery. See more;

Liquid Rainbow by Edwin Deen

Edwin Deen made this great colorful installation based project which uses color pigment, an electric tap, a few meters hose and a plain garden sprinkler. It is called Liquid Rainbow and it springs the liquid wherever it is installed but the visitor doesn't know when it will start to work until the repetition of the spray movement intensifies the seven colors on the walls. See more;

Liquid Rainbowis is being shown at "Use it Again", an ongoing exhibition at Ampelhaus, Oranienbaum, through August 26.
