WendyPaint℠ by Kim Asendorf

WendyPaint℠ is to me one of the greatest projects of this year, it has the same DNA than its creator, online based, patterns, pixels, gradients, glitches and other properties you can find on Kim Asendorf's work. It is basically an online pixel pattern painter, where the user has to create his/her own patterns and paint with. All the patterns are created into a 32 x 32px box which is the maximum size for the brush and in that space you can create whatever you want, I think 32px is enough for a pixel pattern tool, it's the double size than a favicon and per example you can reproduce a lot of already existent icons from the internet whose fit perfect on that space. To build your own patterns it's an interesting and creative process, one has to care quite a lot about the edges of the pattern because WendyPaint only offers one way painting mode which is by dragging the pattern and doing a continue stroke if you keep the brush going on, and one click equals one pattern, so edges are important on here. Once the pattern is done you can edit it using some rotating and flipping features and save them in different modes, but what it's really nice it's that you can also create others using little code through the colour pattern generator and modulator which works using i, x, y, w; variables and with that it's possible to create infinite geometric and glitchy patterns and gradients very quickly, some examples into the post. Another good point is that the users have the option to share the patterns they do and build a public huge archive of patterns, good online based concept. It also has a Stream where there are all the public pieces, make sure you click on the checkbox when saving your painting as it is hidden by default. See more;

WendyPaint's interface it's simple as it's the whole project. I didn't find an undo command to go back some steps while painting but this is probably related to some glitch art concept considering every error beautiful and necessary for the final piece :) . Users who like geometry, the shift key works to keep the horizontal and vertical lines straight, it works on the canvas as well as on the pattern canvas.

In the first image below you can see the interface and in the second one how the modulator formula works, I have drawn a Nyan Cat and then used the modulator to distort it and create an abstract and random new pattern, it is even nice how it glitches. By the way in the Pattern Manager you will find a pattern album I did called eICONS containing few icons, an example of it's the first WendyPainting below.

For people who doesn't know to code and play with the colour generator and pattern modulator here are some examples to introduce you to the fun.

Emilio Gomariz

RGB Landscapes, 2013

RGB Landscapes is a GIF series containing 52 pieces featuring horizontal RGB lines which are animated horizontally creating different moire effects.




1PXW, 2013

1PXW combines web and GIF allowing the user to create a horizontal landscape formed of 1px width animated GIFs using the menu to choose between the different (15) sets and to pop up them by moving the cursor over the little black surface, where Y = changes time interval and X = keeps same time




HR URL01, 2013

HR URL01 creates an animated horizontal composition which works through vertical repetition of any image URL inserted as source then is possible to change the height of from 10px to 1px.




Random Rainbow, 2013

Random Rainbow is a collaborative piece between Emilio Gomariz & Chris Shier made for DigitArt exhibition curated by BRIGHT at Centre Pompidou. The piece was featured through Pompidou's internal WIFI connection at Studio 13/16 during the show (June 29 - August 5), now the piece is already online at http://csh.bz/rr/, it has different behavior on mobile devices as it allows the multitouch feature, as you can see in the video below. 




ii URL02. 2013

ii URL02 works through interactive (1px height) horizontal distortion, the user can insert any image URL such as GIF, JPEG or PNG, play with and share the customized URL as the example below would be http://emiliogomariz.net/iiurl02/?url=http://computersclub.org/draw/collection/CC_1004.png . A piece finished because of some great help from Chris Shier too.

Don Slepian



Don Slepian made Sunflower Geranium in 1983 a video compilation of live performances showing different visual effects created through a custom array of specialized hardware and software to mix synthesized video imagery and original electronic music for a live audience. One of my favorite parts of Sunflower Geranium is at the end where there are several short animations working through pixel based geometric shapes, Slepian explains to Rhizome how he produced them; "is the output of one of my original CEEMAC scores in which I attempt to create texture and dimension using diffraction patterns and chroma shifting. In Apple II "Hi-Res" mode I was working with a 280px by 192px screen, 57 thousand pixels in all. A far cry from the 2.0736 million pixels we take for granted in standard 1080p video frames.

Shift by Media Lab



Shift, an interactive audio visual installation created by Media Lab in 2011. 
"Shift is an array of machines shifting bits and bytes informed by simple and highly repetitive algorithms. Shift pays attention to its environment through the ever-watchful eye of a built-in camera and responds to movement. Changes in state are expressed through audio and visual abstractions." See more;

"During the exhibition, the audience was able to interact with Shift through the build in web-camera of each individual computer. Activity sensed by the camera would result in visual and audible changes animating the audience to further explore the underlying system of the work through different forms of gestures. 

How did the software work? To get started, Andreas prepared a software template, a sketch, that would be used by each individual member of the project. By tweaking and changing parameters and the structure of the software code, new and different mutations of the initial program would emerge. We ended u choosing 20 variations to be displayed. In the next step interactivity was added to the sketches. Since each computer that we were using was equipped with a web camera, we added a code that would allow us to capture, analyze and translate the camera feed into an additional parameter for our sketches."

The algorithms are shaped by Andreas Schlegel, Benson Chong, Darrick Ma, Dhiya Md, Felix Sng, Marvin Liang, Mike Chen, Sid Lim.
