The Wrong - New Digital Art Biennale

Finally last friday first November was launched a huge event on the Internet, an online art biennale called The Wrong including 30 "pavilions" and more than 300 artists. It has been created by David Quiles Guilló who previously has made other great projects such as ROJO and physical events like NOVA Festival. 

The 30 pavilions have been curated by different artists who have selected the participants and designed their own website to showcase the pieces, below into the post there are listed all the active pavilions so far, I recommend to take it easy, you will need more beer in your fridge for sure, there is so much great stuff presented in this online biennale using different digital formats.
I haven't finished yet to see all the works properly but I like the variety in general, also to know about new names and young artists and to see fresh and new work from people I admire. Regarding to the pavilions I like different qualities from each of them such as the curation, the design, aesthetic, presentation, the interaction and functionality with the environment, the social connection, feedback with visitors. 

The online biennale will be open till 31 December of this year, during this time it will be quite active and featuring new pavilions, don't miss anything by following all the the feedback of on its fb page here. There is also an unlimited pavilion called Homeostasis Lab which displays a selection of artwork submissions of artists and general public interested in participating in the event, another pavilions give this option too.

The Wrong has recruited several art spaces in cities around the world (listed below) as The Wrong Embassies, a temporary AFK project, where the physicalexperience of the digital biennale will take place with live performances, workshops and exhibitions. See more;

MGMT - OPTIMIZER

MGMT has released their third album, a self-titled LP and along with two psychedelic visual projects which have been launched together, one is called "Optimizer", an immersive audio and visual experience to accompany the new album for its full 44 minute run time. It has been directed and edited by Alejandro Miguel Justino Crawford by mixing the visuals produced by Andrew Benson, Chris Timms, Geoffrey Lillemon and Emilio Gomariz. The Optimizer comes together by buying the album on iTunes.

The second visual and interactive project it's their own website whoismgmt.com whose background features a classic already distortion and melting aesthetic created by Chris Shier who has built an interactive painting website working in multiuser mode which means that everyone who is on the website will be painting together over the same canvas in real time. For this occasion Chris has put several easter eggs in your keyboard keys to change colours and aesthetic of the different strokes, also there is another one to create "G"ifs of cropped areas of the painting process.. try it! 1PXW combines web and GIF allowing the user to create a horizontal landscape formed of 1px width animated GIFs using the menu to choose between the different (15) sets and to pop up them by moving the cursor over the little black surface, where Y = changes time interval and X = keeps same time

Random Rainbow is a collaborative piece between Emilio Gomariz & Chris Shier made for DigitArt exhibition curated by BRIGHT at Centre Pompidou. The piece was featured through Pompidou's internal WIFI connection at Studio 13/16 during the show (June 29 - August 5), now the piece is already online at http://csh.bz/rr/, it has different behavior on mobile devices as it allows the multitouch feature, as you can see in the video below.

The Act of Selecting Objectified .com

Jan Robert Leegte continues exploring the selection marquee through the website by putting it as an object. This new piece titled "The Act of Selecting Objectified" it's probably the evolution of selectionasanobject.com where every time you refresh the page it appears a new rectangular selection, this time the user interact with the work by creating a new selection. 

Late last year he also made another minimal and great concept using the selection marquee but in connection with a random imagery source which contextualizes what we see in Photoshop everyday, check it out here. Jan Robert Leegte is being quite productive online lately, I recommend to see on his website some other good works he created this year. See more;

W-H-A-T-E-V-E-R.NET by Emilie Gervais

w-h-a-t-e-v-e-r.net is a project created by Emilie Gervais working through a simple but great concept, consisting in a website where you can upload your HTML pages as girl or boy art. A gendered HTML collection which was launched last week and there are already some interesting pieces from both sides, you can see some of them into the post. It seems the boys are being a bit more participative so far. 

So you can upload whatever you want as whatever you are but you should know that the website only upload the HTML file and doesn't host any other file from the HTML, such as images, videos.. if it's the case make sure you use online source. See more;

Joe Hamilton

Trouble in Utopia and Survey are two recent good works by Joe Hamilton. Both projects work under the disorientation and hyper-reality created by Joe working through animated collage, numerous layers, transitions and different perspectives. The first one was created for BYOB Melbourne 2013 which took place at the new RMIT design Hub building designed by Sean Godsell in Melbourne. As Joe Hamilton told us; "the video work Trouble in Utopia is about the building. The building is quite brutal and moderist which really appeals to my taste but at the same time the starkness of the concrete and metal surfaces is quite dystopian. The piece is about these contradicting thoughts about the building. The title for the piece was taken from an episode of the documentary series shock of the new by recently deceased art critic Robert Hughes. The episode is about modernism's failure to bring about the utopian city through architecture." (Into the post you can see the video but I recommend to see it at the project page as the video works together and synchronized with several backgrounds which makes the entire piece.)

The second piece into the post titled Survey is quite crazy, this time Joe has used real video footage and did an excellent exercise of tracking, by attaching onto the building and its outdoor another imagery source. I also like how he complemented the perspectives and structures with flat green plans which fit perfect but at the same time make a big contrast with the high presence of vegetation. See more;

Mesmerizing websites

Gifmelter, by Chris Shier & Tim Baker

I'm impressed about several websites I have discovered recently. They create a crazy abstract visual experience, I like the flow by interacting with them, how fast and well they work and also the chaos they generate by submitting a source. 

Into the post you can see 3 pieces, each of them created by a different artist, the first one is called Gifmelter, by Chris Shier & Tim Baker, where you can upload an animated gif and let it flow by interacting with it. I'm really looking forward to see what's next from Noisia, he has created so much good work in the last months (check out these 2 previous posts; 1, 2).

The second image into the post is from a website by David Kraftsow aka dontsave, called yooouuutuuube.com, where you can enter a Youtube video url and select three different modes such as feedback, zoetrope and mosaic, which is also awesome to see an entire video being distorted through all these modes in real time. Btw I didn't know before the work of David Kraftsow, and I didn't like only the piece I just mentioned but several of them lined up on his website, I like how he works visually but also conceptually, this is quite beautiful piece http://dontsave.com/waterfall_tracking/.

The last image is from a new work by Andrew Benson, called Radical Paintings, this piece doesn't take external imagery source, but I love it as I do with the visual work by Andrew working through video, it's great to interact with his acid visuals finally on the web! See more;

Chris Shier - noisia

Chris Shier aka noisia, updated his website last September including some impressive "canvases" as he calls to the interactive based websites he is creating. The thing is that he's continuing working so hard on this series and the results are just crazy! Psychedelic colors, glitchy atmosphere and digital madness, try it yourself in his website (in the menu, those ones with the empty bullets are for interactive and filled bullets for clickable).
