noisia

I'm a huge fan of Chris Shier aka noisia's mesmerizing moire based GIF series which usually are created using several layers/GIFs to create an unique piece, by overlaying them and playing with the transparency, just have a look to some great works he made for ANI-GIF,  dump.fm/irl/ or  Virtual Art Fair, more in his website
While ago noisia's minimal style and geometrical forms went into website, creating some addictive interactive animations. Actually he just did a big update in his website featuring 21 new canvases! All these new works are made using HTML5, open source. noisia told us he didn't use any external javascript, frameworks or libraries. All the canvases are listed in his website, just go and play, in the menu, those ones with the empty bullets are for interactive and filled bullets for clickable. I also was impressed about how the interactive ones flow through the iPhone, must see it! Below are some stills from some canvases, click them to see the website. FICTION 1 by Hugo Arcier

FICTION 1 by Hugo Arcier_
"This full 3D computer graphics film draws from the events that struck Japan in March 2011, and more specifically, the way the events were covered in the media.
Three-dimensional computer graphics are not a simple recording of reality, but are calculated images, simulated by computers. Through a disturbing mirror effect, they help account for the "unreality" of images that linger on after certain catastrophic events. Ultimately, for the foreign audience of the March 2011 tsunami, what really remains from the images disseminated in the media is no more than a series of scenes of "action" and desolation — the wave that struck and the devastation that it left in its wake." See more;

"The analytic dynamics upon which 3D computer graphics are based, and the need for the artist to retreat from the immediate present and stand back, present the audience with a synthetic rendition in which primitive emotion no longer paralyzes thought in the face of catastrophe. This allows viewers to move away from the continuous flow — mediatized but also literally represented in the film — that carries them away and thereby provides a chance to find a place for a special kind of reflection, one that nourishes humaneness and the ability to reason.

These computer graphics dissect reality, as the scalpel of an anatomist might do to reveal the hidden parts of the body. They rid the catastrophic event of the overstated layers depicted in the media images and commentary.
From the profusion of images extracted from real-world events, this video reconstructs an image of the tsunami aimed at depicting this event in all its truth.

A stripped-down image, without speech, without words, a pensive evocation of the tsunami: a quintessence of reality.
Despite their fictional nature, aren't 3D computer graphics a means of reactivating anesthetized thoughts, for regenerating meaning, and by their power of abstraction, for making the invisible visible?"

Original music by Jean-Christophe Feldhandler. Sound Engineer Francois Vatin.

Hugo Arcier has also created three polyamide sculptures, which shows the progression of the flood on the video.

Sensual Objects by Chris Timms

While ago I published one GIF by Chris Timms I found on tumblr, this one. I was mesmerized about the flow, colors and forms. Then I started to follow his work through his tumblr called sensualobjects.tumblr.com where he only publish work made by him, it is a world full of organic objects who live and move according to the rhythm of the internet.
One week ago Chris has just launched a new visual work, a 01.55 min video piece which follows the same aesthetics of that previously named GIF. See more;

Chris Timms tells us more about this piece_
"I was experimenting making these quite sexualised and stylised gif's, and the ones that stood out for me always had this kind of submerged sensual quality, beyond the intented aesthetic ascribed to their surface. Practically, Tumblr's size restrictions quickly pushed me on to make a video, but I became really interested in the way video is still the primary form of distribution for trailers or introductions to bigger projects, in that they are the primary (and often only) encounter with the work. So I worked somewhat backwards, presenting this as a completely self-contained promo."

Sensual Object is being part of the great monthly exhibition called Astral Projection Abduction Fantasy curated by Standard Features at Monster Truck Gallery in Dublin, Ireland. The screening dates: 23 February – 22 March 2012; 5pm-12pm daily. I highly recommend to attend, see more info here.
