▇▇▇ by Alvaro Posadas

Alvaro Posadas is a visual artist based in Barcelona and co-founder of Actop since 2003, where he is experimenting with visual motion.
His work has been broadcast worldwide and exhibited in different festivals and international events such as Onedotzero, Art Beijing, Sonar, Loop, Art Futura, Restfest, Dotmov...
▇▇▇ is a light particles project to experiment with sound surgery. It was made with After Effects, Trapcode Form and a Roland SP-404SX Sampler. See video;

Thomas Albdorf

The photographer and graphic designer Thomas Albdorf was born in 1982 in Linz, Upper. Austria. Currently is living in Vienna, Austria.
I like the minimalistic way that Thomas is looking for his photography, almost his entire photostream is based in objects and his own sculptures centered into the picture. See more;

He tells us a little about this obssesion;

"I think the film format I'm using, medium format, square 6x6, forces the centering a bit, secondly I'm used to work precisely due to my background as graphic designer, and well ... as mentioned, I'm a bit neurotic, so centering the main object I'm focusing simply feels better to me. Also, due to the fact that I'm mainly working with one single object that I stage and take a photo of, that really works like a sculpture for me, centering is necessary to lead the focus to this one object."

Light painting WiFi

The city is filled with an invisible landscape of networks that is becoming an interwoven part of daily life. WiFi networks and increasingly sophisticated mobile phones are starting to influence how urban environments are experienced and understood. The creators, Timo Arnall, Jørn Knutsen and Einar Sneve Martinussen are exploring the immaterial terrain of WiFi looks like and how it relates to the city. See more;

"The measuring rod is inspired by the poles land surveyors use to map and describe the physical landscape. Similarly, our equipment allows us to reveal and represent topographies of wireless networks. The measuring rod uses a typical mobile WiFi antenna to measure reception, and draw out 4 metre tall graphs of light."

Sabrina Ratté

Sabrina Ratté lives and works in Montreal. Her first introduction to moving images was through cinema ten years ago, but now she primarily works with video. She often collaborates with musicians in many different contexts, and she has an on going collaboration with electronic composer Roger Tellier-Craig aka Le Révélateur. She recently moved to Paris to complete her MFA. See more;

Sabrina tell us about her creative motion process;

"My videos are often the result of experiments with tools and softwares that anyone can have access to. The challenge is to find ways to use these tools in order to create new forms and new perspectives on the aesthetic of video. I am mostly inspired by the diverse manifestations of light; artificial, electronic or natural. Recently I’ve been exploring the possibilities of generating light through video feedbacks, and in finding new ways of using presets included in different editing softwares."

Gareth Spor

"Often fixating on the physics of light, the cosmos, and the geometries of space and time, I work across a diverse range of media to explore the states of wonderment achieved when people contemplate things larger than themselves. My work is a means to feed my own curiosity and to share some of the wonderment I feel with others." - Gareth Spor. See more;

Replica

Replica is a performance using live image processing to explore how the awareness of time affects the perception of self-image. Patterns unfold creating a dialogue between the performer and her representation, bringing the contrast of control and authenticity into question. See more;

The project was developed in Processing using the Most Pixels Ever library. Video was pulled from a Canon 5D Mark II camera using Canon’s EOS utility and CamTwist to communicate with Processing. To broadcast to each of the three machines powering the video wall, Daniel Shiffman helped us figure out a way to send and receive the images using UDP.

Replica was created by Jeff Howard and Alex Vessels for the class Big Screens at ITP. The project was presented at the IAC building’s 120 foot video wall in Chelsea, December,  2010.The project was performed by Claire Westby with the song “Lost in the World” by Kanye West.

"ACH Transaction Rejected" payments lead to Zeus

On February 23rd, our friends at Trend Micro reported that ACH Leads to Fake Java Update. Looking into this campaign in the UAB Spam Data Mine we found some interesting characteristics about the spam campaign.

We've seen NACHA, the National Automated Clearing House Association, used as bait for a Zeus trap before. See our article from November 2009, Newest Zeus = NACHA The Electronic Payments Association.

The spam body, containing a random signator name and random domain reads:

===========================================================================

The ACH transaction , recently initiated from your bank account (by you or any
other person), was rejected by the Electronic Payments Association.

Please click here to view details

==========================================================================

Here are our counts by Subject so far for this campaign:

count | subject
-------+---------------------------
1656 | ACH Transfer cancelled
1620 | Your ACH Transfer
1558 | ACH Transfer rejected
1598 | Your ACH transaction
1610 | ACH transaction cancelled
1622 | ACH transaction rejected
(6 rows)

That's out of a volume of slightly more than 1 million emails per day. Here it is with date added:

count | subject | receiving_date
-------+---------------------------+----------------
10 | ACH transaction cancelled | 2011-02-22
13 | ACH transaction rejected | 2011-02-22
23 | ACH Transfer cancelled | 2011-02-22
18 | ACH Transfer rejected | 2011-02-22
15 | Your ACH transaction | 2011-02-22
11 | Your ACH Transfer | 2011-02-22
1600 | ACH transaction cancelled | 2011-02-23
1609 | ACH transaction rejected | 2011-02-23
1633 | ACH Transfer cancelled | 2011-02-23

1583 | Your ACH transaction | 2011-02-23
1609 | Your ACH Transfer | 2011-02-23
(12 rows)

What was extremely interesting about this campaign was the large number of domains it registered to be used in this abuse. Fortunately, these were all "GoDaddy.com" domains and were quickly brought under control to prevent the spread of the malware.

all came in between 7 PM and 7:15 PM into the UAB Spam Data Mine.

If you've read some of our Technical Reports then you know that UAB has a unique capability to build "Spam Clusters" of messages related on many different factors. One of our fairly standard checks is to ask "what other spam is coming from the machines that sent us this spam?"

In this case, the answer was NOTHING.

It was as if every single machine that sent this spam message had been uniquely compromised for the sole purpose of sending us this email. Out of 9,610 sending IP addresses, only TWO of them had been seen previously sending spam to the UAB Spam Data Mine. Two Viagra ad from 196.22.14.4 on February 18th and 19th and a set of seven Viagra ads from 112.135.85.114 on February 8th and 9th. The other 9,608 sending IP addresses had not sent us any spam, at least in the past month. That's so unusual that it is actually impossible. There are so many bot-infected computers that randomly selecting any 9,000 internet-connected computers, there is NO CHANCE that none of them sent me spam.

It turns out the spam messages had "dubious header records" inserted.

To explore this deeper, I looked at the headers of 92 email messages I had personally received in this campaign (as opposed to the UAB Spam Data Mine receiving them -- the smaller data set is easier to manipulate for manual or quick scripting review.)

It turned out that the 92 emails, which at first seemed to come from 92 different IPs, actually came from 14 machines, with the most popular ones being:

Received: from static.vdc.vn [113.160.224.168]
Received: from triband-mum-59.184.120.21.mtnl.net.in [59.184.120.21]
Received: from 95.subnet125-164-81.speedy.telkom.net.id [125.164.81.95]

All well known spammer IPs (click links to see their "Project Honeypot" reputations).

While digging deeper, it seems that each of the spam messages was sent while authenticated into gmail. As a quick spot check, I examined the 92 email messages that I received in my personal accounts. Out of the 92, 92 of them had an "envelope-from" and a matching "Return-Path:" statement showing a gmail account that had been used to send the spam message:

Rory Donaldson

Rory Donaldson is a Scottish born artist living and working in New York. His works consist of a variety of different pieces, that span a range between sculpture, installation and wall based work. The chosen medium also reflects this diversity, embroidery, found postcards, drawing, painting and photography. See more;

These pictures are part of his SQ photograph series. I don't know how the images have been distorted, software, edited, filter... In the following images you can see the complete piece and other image which shows its detail.
