I'm Google by Dina Kelberman

Impressive research based works by Dina Kelberman. Im featuring one of her ongoing projects called "I'm Google" which presents a great organized image and video research by many different factors. But I highly recommend to check out also her other similar ongoing projects featuring a huge variety of imagery source such as found image, photographs, cartoons.. like the one at her start page called "smoke and fire" also presented at the New Museum as online exhibition.

"My work comes out of my natural tendency to spend long hours collecting and organizing imagery from the internet, television, and other commonplace surroundings of my everyday life. I make things as I am compelled to make them and consider why later, often making connections I didn’t consciously set out to realize. I gravitate towards things that are simple, colorful, industrial, and mundane. I am also interested in using materials that are easily accessible and familiar to the everyday person. My work elevates the familiar and transforms brief moments into infinite stretches of time. "I’m Google is an ongoing tumblr blog in which batches of images and videos that I cull from the internet are compiled into a long stream-of-consciousness. The batches move seamlessly from one subject to the next based on similarities in form, composition, color, and theme. This results visually in a colorful grid that slowly changes as the viewer scrolls through it. Images of houses being demolished transition into images of buildings on fire, to forest fires, to billowing smoke, to geysers, to bursting fire hydrants, to fire hoses, to spools of thread. The site is constantly updated week after week, batch by batch, sometimes in bursts, sometimes very slowly.

The blog came out of my natural tendency to spend long hours obsessing over Google Image searches, collecting photos I found beautiful and storing them by theme. Often the images that interest me are of industrial or municipal materials or everyday photo snapshots. I do not select images or videos that appear to be intentionally artistic. Happily, the process of researching various themes in this way has lead to unintentionally learning about topics I might never have otherwise, including structural drying, bale feeders, B2P, VAWTs, screw turbines, the cleveland pack, and powder coating.

I feel that my experience wandering through Google Image Search and YouTube hunting for obscure information and encountering unexpected results is a very common one. My blog serves as a visual representation of this phenomenon. This ability to endlessly drift from one topic to the next is the inherently fascinating quality that makes the internet so amazing." - Dina Kelberman.

Cloaque.org

Cloaque.org is a really interesting collaborative project founded by Carlos Saez. It consists in an endless vertical collage hosted on a tumblr platform where artists are invited to continue the previous work making that column bigger and bigger.

What I love here is the freedom to work on,  no rules for the artists participating. The visitor can find a lot of different based works and styles such as collages from internet researches, sculptural tridimensional objects, illustration, photography.. everything is following that vertical direction and is arranged by artist, the different pieces are joined in some way because of the new collaborator. Describe the project itself please

Cloaque is a collaborative project on tumblr. Artists from anywhere compose a vertical and continuous collage as a “cadavre exquisite”. It was created originally as a digital landfill: A place to collect, treat and join together digital trash that we find on the internet. But each artist can just continue the collumn on his/her way. Collaborators are 100% free to upload whatever they want.

Who is behind of cloaque?

Claudia Maté and me (Carlos Saez) started the project. Cloaque looks like this because of her. She is my last discovering, my favorite work mate. Now there are more people behind of the project. Actually, everyone who has already collaborated or is going to do it,  it's behind of Cloaque.

How/when did the project start? 
We launched it last January, but I created the idea some months before. I asked Claudia to do the website and she really liked the project. Her ideas fitted so good with cloaque that I asked her not only to work for, but also to be part of. From that moment Cloaque had a father and a mother and the concept turned 180º.

Where does the name came from, or what does cloaque mean?
Cloaque is a french word. Is a part from the excretory system from birds and some reptiles. Is the place where excrements, urine and sperm meet. It means also cesspit. But before to know all this, it was a fetiche word I had, even ignoring if it was existing. It does not only exist, but also fits with the idea of the project.

How does it work?
We contact people we like, or they contact us to continue the collumn. It can be artists of any media and they can post whatever they want. We just tell them some “instructions” like size, formats..
The idea is that during the days they are working on, cloaque.org belongs to them. Usually they publish one post (part) per day until finishing the whole piece and then another collaborator continues the latest piece by connecting it somehow with his/her own.

What kind of content is it possible to upload?
Everything, there are not esthetic cannons or favorite disciplines. It’s not necessary to post just images or GIFs, everything the collaborator can embed through an iframe is welcome.

Have you been inspired by anything to create it?
Google Images gave me the idea. To look for something, type it and get thousands of not related, non sense and stupid images made me fall in the idea of “digital trash”. Thats how I decided to create a digital landfill.

tumblr is a great customizable platform, we are seeing lately stunning customized tumblrs, cloaque.org is one of them, do you know any other tumblr or website based on the collage form?
Hypergeography.com by Joe Hamilton is incredible. This is just beyond! Not really as an usual collage, but also an amazing idea is thirozumi.tumblr.com. Claudia updates me with everything since we are working together, and this two are my favorites.

Thirozumi's tumblr

Tumblr is one of the free platforms most I like because it is very customizable, it can be used as you really want, even from a blank html. I'm lately seeing several tumblrs which feature interesting themes. I just found this one by Thirozumi, to be honest in the beginning I didn't know what I was seeing, I only noticed about the colored diagonals and the cool visual effect by scrolling down or right. Then I went to its archive to see the single posts and what kind of content had there. On the archive there are normal pictures from reblogs or posts but if you click on whatever picture you go to a single colored diagonal, so this tumblr shows all the content published on in that diagonal and deformed way, I really like it, it's like two projects in one, a personal research and an abstract colored visualization from all that research. I have looked at all the archive and I have found few GIFs, I was thinking how beautiful would be to see at least one page of this tumblr full of different animated GIFs.
